Research In Veterinary Science

Information about Human corona viruses (HCoVs) was scarce until the emergence of the first SARS-CoV, however there was extensive knowledge in Veterinary Medicine about animal CoVs, their evolution and pathobiology.CoVs have an exceptional ability to expand their host range; in animals we have observed repeated events of CoVs inter-species transmission. Animals CoVs can represent an excellent host model for development of SARS-CoV2 vaccine. The challenges encountered with the prophylaxis and treatment of animal CoV diseases, such as Feline Infectious Peritonitis, might be useful to address issues related to COVID-19 in a One Health approach.Veterinary medicine should have a preponderant role in a more reverent management of the environment and animals to prevent future emergence of pandemic CoVs and advance the global “One Health” movement.
