Influence of macronutrient composition of commercial diets on circulating leptin and adiponectin concentrations in overweight dogs

Overweight dogs were enrolled and assigned one of three groups. After a control period of one week, the groups were fed one of the following: a) a high protein diet (HP), b) a high fat diet (HF), c) a high carbohydrate and medium protein diet (HCMP) when compared to the control/ maintenance diet (high in carbohydrates and low in protein HCLP). Each group was fed all test diets in a different sequence. Feeding did not affect the baseline leptin concentrations, however it did affect the leptin peak concentrations. The HP diet provided the lowest leptin peak concentration and a lower total leptin releaseFeeding did not change serum adiponectin. The HF and HCMP diet caused lower concentrations of baseline serum adiponectin than the HCLP diet. Results showed male dogs had higher baseline adiponectin than female dogs. Adiponectin was also influenced by age, increasing with age.This study highlights the beneficial effects of a HP diet on leptin concentration, while causing minimal decline in adiponectin concentrations; it might improve immune metabolic health and post-pandrial satiety in overweight dogs.
